What is Laser Therapy?

Laser therapy is defined as Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBMT) and it is a form of light therapy that uses non-ionizing light sources, including lasers, in the visible (400 – 700nm) and near-infrared (700 – 1100 nm) electromagnetic spectrum, for therapeutic purposes.

The treatment consists of a light source that is placed near or in contact with the skin, allowing the light energy (photons) to penetrate tissue and interact with the cytochrome c complex within mitochondria, where it triggers a biological cascade of events that include:

  • Increase in cellular metabolism
  • Promoting wound healing
  • Tissue regeneration
  • Alleviation of pain
  • Improved microcirculation to injured tissue
  • Reduction in muscle spasm

Power influences PBMT in many ways. Energy imparted to the body is measure in Joules, which is the product of power (Watts) and time (seconds). Higher power allows more energy to be delivered to tissue in less time, and this allows for larger areas and deeper tissues to be treated more quickly.

LightForce ® lasers can deliver higher power for various conditions whilst incorporating delivery systems that efficiently treat tissue in a way that is comfortable to the patient. Laser therapy is used to treat acute and chronic conditions as well as post-activity recovery. It is also used for pre- and post-surgery treatment to help control pain and swelling. It can be used for acute and chronic conditions as well as post-activity recovery.

These are some of the conditions that laser therapy is clinically used for:

  • Joint swelling
  • Muscle strain/ pain
  • Tendinopathy
  • Myofascial pain
  • OA related pain
  • Neck and back pain (chronic and acute)
  • Neuropathy
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendon pathology
  • DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness)
  • Headaches
  • TMJ pain
  • Lymphedema

Laser therapy is a modality used by physiotherapists to assist with treating the above conditions listed, along with other modalities that he/she may opt for, in your treatment session.
